Patients following revision total hip arthroplasty with modular dual mobility components and cobalt-chromium inner metal head are at risk of increased serum metal ion levels

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 25, 2020

Civinini R, et al. - Researchers explored the potential risks for fretting corrosion at this junction, by measuring serum metal ions, after modular dual-mobility (MDM) acetabular revision. A cross-sectional study was designed to include a total of 37 individuals with well-functioning revision total hip arthroplasties (THAs) at mean 5.1 (2-10) years after surgery. Mass spectrometry was used to assess serum levels of cobalt and chromium. The results reveal that serum metal level elevation may occur secondary to metal debris resulting from corrosion of the index MDM THA. In young and active individuals, this potential risk should be involved in the decision-making process when dealing with revision arthroplasty.
