Patients choose certainty over burden in bladder cancer surveillance
World Journal of Urology Nov 28, 2019
van Osch FHM, Nekeman D, Aaronson NK, et al. - The preferences for a hypothetical diagnostic urinary biomarker was examined and compared with usual care (cystoscopy) at various levels of sensitivity among 437 people with bladder cancer (354 men and 83 women) from the UK Bladder Cancer Prognosis Programme in order to evaluate the level of sensitivity needed prior to the individuals accept a new urinary biomarker. Nearly half of individuals (n = 183) would not compensate cystoscopy with a urinary biomarker unless it was 100% sensitive. Results were constant across all patient features and demographic divisions. Thus, the results designate that people need urinary biomarkers as sensitive as cystoscopy before they would be ready to choose cystoscopy for bladder cancer surveillance.
