Patient satisfaction and pain control using an opioid-sparing postoperative pathway
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Jun 05, 2019
Hallway A, et al. - An opioid-sparing pain management strategy was evaluated for its feasibility after surgical procedures. Researchers offered the opportunity to participate in an opioid-sparing pain management pathway to patients undergoing 6 procedures. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen use was advised, and a small “rescue” opioid prescription was provided for breakthrough pain. Postoperatively, the patients were surveyed about opioid use and patient-reported outcomes measures. Analysis of a total of 190 patients was done. They noted minimal or no opioid use among participants following the implementation of an opioid-sparing pathway with high satisfaction and pain control. The results thereby support the efficacy and acceptability of major reduction and even dismissal of opioids after discharge from minor surgical procedures.
