Patient satisfaction after tha is not influenced by reductions in opioid prescribing
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 11, 2021
Bloom DA, Manjunath AK, Gualtieri AP, et al. - In this study, the effect of the implementation of an opioid-sparing protocol on survey-based patient satisfaction scores following total hip arthroplasty(THA) was explored. Between November 2014 and July 2019, researchers carried out a retrospective review of prospectively-collected data on patients who had undergone primary THA. They examined Hospital-Consumer-Assessment-of-Healthcare-Providers-and-Systems(HCAHPS) results for the percentage of “top-box” ratings for comparison between the two groups. They included 1,003 patients, 804 pre-protocol,199 post-protocol. After THA, a reduction in opioids prescribed is not correlated with a decrease in patient satisfaction with regard to pain control, as assessed by the HCAHPS survey, nor is it correlated with an increase in postoperative opioid refills.
