Patient-reported symptoms after breast cancer diagnosis and treatment: A retrospective cohort study

European Journal of Cancer Aug 23, 2018

Davis LE, et al. - In this observational study, researchers linked cancer incidence, stage, treatment and demographic data with Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) scores collected at cancer clinic visits to describe symptom burden in the year following diagnosis among women with breast cancer. Participants were all adult women diagnosed with stage I–III breast cancer between 2007 and 2013 whose primary treatment was surgery and had at least one symptom screening record. Tiredness had the highest incidence of moderate-to-severe scores. In the 6 months following diagnosis, elevated symptom scores were most commonly reported. Moderate-to-severe and severe symptom scores were reported in relation to higher comorbidity score (Aggregated Diagnosis Group ≥ 10), more advanced stage at diagnosis, younger age, urban residence, lower income and treatment course.
