Patient-reported outcomes following total hip arthroplasty: A multicenter comparison based on surgical approaches
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 30, 2019
Finch DJ, et al. - Researchers compared posterior, transgluteal, and anterior surgical approaches to total hip arthroplasty (THA), in terms of pre to post-operative alterations in patient-reported outcomes (PROs), by utilizing prospective data from a large, multi-center study. They analyzed results from 3,018 eligible participants receiving primary THA at 26 sites engaging in the Pulmonary Embolism Prevention after Hip and Knee Replacement (PEPPER) trial. The brief Hip Osteoarthritis Outcomes Survey, the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Physical Health score, and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale were considered as outcomes. Findings revealed a dramatic improvement in PROs 6-months post-THA, irrespective of the plane of surgical approach. This indicates that surgical approach can be selected as per the preference of surgeons and patients without fear of differential early outcomes.
