Patient-reported outcomes and complications after surgical fixation of 143 proximal phalanx fractures
The Journal of Hand Surgery Oct 10, 2019
Kootstra TJM, Keizer J, Bhashyam A, et al. - A total of 159 individuals with 159 proximal phalanx fractures were recognized in 2 level 2 trauma centers in order to contrast patient-reported outcomes measures and complications of Kirschner wire (K-wire), lag-screw and plate fixation of proximal phalanx fractures (excluding the thumb). No variations in functional outcomes were discovered between fixation methods, however unplanned reoperation was more prevalent in the plate fixation group (n = 9) vs the K-wire and lag-screw fixation groups (n = 3; 1, respectively). The K-wire fixation was also discovered to be correlated with superior aesthetic outcome in comparison with open reduction internal fixation. Thus, overall patient-reported outcomes measure scores were comparable across fixation methods, and unplanned reoperation was more common following plate fixation. Furthermore, irrespective of fracture pattern, percutaneous fixation with K-wires was frequently adequate and was related to superior aesthetic outcome in comparison with those who had open reduction and internal fixation.
