Patient-reported health problems and healthcare use after treatment for early-stage breast cancer

The Breast Jul 04, 2019

de Ligt KM, et al. - Researchers conducted a survey among 876 surgically-treated female patients with early-stage breast cancer to determine treatment-related health problems and healthcare use related to these health problems. With a median age of 62 years, 404 patients responded. Besides breast surgery, patients had been treated with radiotherapy (72%), chemotherapy (49%), anti-hormonal therapy (57%), or axillary dissection (21%). During follow-up, 93% of patients with breast cancer reported health problems. The most reported health problem was fatigue (63%). Following diagnosis (< 5 years), health problems were consistently present over time, according to findings. An increased risk of health problems was observed in relation to chemotherapy in particular. Half of the reported health problems led to healthcare use.
