Patient quality of life after interpolated flap repair of nasal Mohs surgery defects: A multicenter prospective cohort study
JAMA Aug 31, 2021
Lukowiak TM, Perz AM, Veerabagu SA, et al. - In this investigation involving 169 patients (92 men [54.4%]; mean [SD] age, 67.7 [11.4] years), removal of nasal skin cancer and repair of the resulting defect can be distressing for patients. This cohort study, on the other hand, suggests that physicians referring patients for Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) can be confident that their patients' quality of life (QOL) will improve on average after surgery, even if a complex reconstruction is needed.
It was a multicenter prospective survey study.
Skin Cancer Index (SCI) surveys were completed by 47 patients (75 men [51.0%]; mean [SD] age, 67.8 [11.7] years) both before MMS and 16 weeks after flap removal.
When compared with pre-MMS scores, total SCI scores improved significantly 16 weeks after flap removal, increasing by a mean of 13%.
When compared with pre-MMS, all 3 SCI subscale scores (emotion, appearance, and social) improved significantly 16 weeks after flap removal.
