Patient preferences for diagnostic testing in the Emergency Department: A cross-sectional study

Academic Emergency Medicine Jun 17, 2018

Porath JD, et al. - A cross-sectional survey among emergency department patients for diagnostic testing in two hypothetical scenarios (chest pain and mild traumatic brain injury) was performed to investigate if a patient's willingness to have diagnostic testing is impacted by the potential benefit, risk, and personal cost. Significant differences in patient preferences for diagnostic testing were observed across levels of risk, benefit, and cost of diagnostic testing. Cost was noted to be the most reliable and robust factor linked to a decreased desire for testing.
