Patient patterns and perspectives on using opioid regimens for chronic cancer pain

Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Apr 19, 2019

Wright EM, et al. - Given the increasing attention to the undertreatment of cancer pain as well as the increasing concerns about opioid misuse, researchers investigated the tactics patients use to manage chronic cancer pain with long-acting opioids. In this multimethods study, adherence to prescribed long-acting opioid regimens was recorded by adult patients with chronic cancer pain (n=17) using electronic pill caps. After viewing their adherence records, patients completed a semistructured interview concerning their opioid use after eight weeks. Findings suggest that because of perceptions of their risks and benefits, patients often felt conflicted about the use of prescribed long-acting opioids, so they set their own limits with regard to taking opiods. Findings emphasize improving adherence communication, education, and counseling to enhance the use of long-acting opioids as a part of managing cancer pain.
