Patient initiated partner treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the Netherlands: Views of patients with and partners notified for Chlamydia

International Journal of STD & AIDS Oct 04, 2019

Nanhoe AC, et al. - Patients infected with Chlamydia and persons notified for Chlamydia (partners) at sexual health clinics (SHCs) and general practitioners’ offices were examined for the patient-initiated partner therapy (PIPT)-willingness. Twenty heterosexual patients and 21 partners were interviewed regarding real or hypothetical situations. Although challenges were encountered in notifying partners in some cultural groups and some partner types, most patients and partners would cooperate with PIPT. Unnecessary treatment, risking untreated other sexually transmitted infections and breaking the notification chain were the perceived barriers. Although PIPT may support partner notification (PN), diagnosis before treatment was preferred by many patients and partners. Findings support PIPT with medication or a prescription coupled with a home-based test-kit as the way forward. However, the type of partner and cultural background seemed to influence PN and differentiated PN and partner therapy methods are thus required.
