Patient factors influence surgical options in gastroparesis
American Journal of Surgery Feb 25, 2020
Thompson JS, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how the surgical approach to gastroparesis is influenced by patient factors. They reviewed 95 patients undergoing 105 surgical procedures for gastroparesis and compared patient factors across six surgical procedures: gastric neurostimulator, pyloroplasty, neurostimulator plus pyloroplasty, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and gastrectomy. Findings suggest the possible influence of patient factors on the choice of procedure in the surgical treatment of gastroparesis. A postsurgical etiology was more frequently reported among patients undergoing pyloroplasty and gastrectomy. BMI > 35 was more frequently reported among patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Preoperative gastroesophageal reflux was less frequently reported in those undergoing sleeve gastrectomy.
