Patient experience of thyroid cancer active surveillance in Japan
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Feb 05, 2019
Davies L, et al. - Investigators to evaluated the experiences of 249 candidates at Kuma Hospital in Kobe, Japan in the longest-standing and largest thyroid cancer active surveillance program. About 80% of respondents agreed/strongly agreed regarding whether the decision of active surveillance matched their personal values. They also observed that 83% of patients personally felt the active surveillance was the best decision for them; about 77% of the population was not aware of active surveillance as an option prior to it being offered as an option. They noted that subjects with thyroid cancer under active surveillance had major cancer concern which was similar to the worry among actively treated patients. They recorded a gradual decline in the levels of cancer worry patients under active surveillance over time and an increase in satisfaction with their disease management decision.
