Patient-controlled sedation with propofol for endoscopic procedures – A cost-analysis
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Aug 29, 2019
Grossmann B, et al. - Researchers applied a hospital perspective on a cost analysis comparing various methods of sedation and the resource use that were expected to influence cost variations associated with the sedation. Propofol patient-controlled sedation (PCS) with a bedside nurse anesthetist led to lower costs per patient for sedation for both endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) (233 USD) and a bronchoscopy in comparison with midazolam. Aborted procedures that required to be repeated and prolonged hospital stays significantly enhanced the cost for the midazolam groups. Thus, propofol PCS with a bedside nurse anesthetist decreases the direct sedation costs for ERCP and bronchoscopy procedures in contrast with midazolam sedation.
