Patient and implant survival following intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures during primary total hip arthroplasty: An analysis from the national joint registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man
The Bone & Joint Journal Oct 10, 2019
Lamb JN, et al. - In a retrospective cohort study that contrasted 4,831 hips with intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures (IOPFFs) and 48,154 propensity score matched primary THA without IOPFF implanted between 2004 and 2016, researchers contrasted implant and patient survival after IOPFFs during primary THA with matched controls. After surgery, IOPFF elevated risk of stem revision and mortality up to ten years. The risk of revision relayed on IOPFF subtype and mortality risk raised with following revision surgery. In order to decrease fracture progression and implant failure, surgeons should cautiously diagnose and treat IOPFF.
