Patient and hospital characteristics of mitral valve surgery in the United States
JAMA Oct 11, 2019
Vemulapalli S, et al. - Through a cross-sectional, multicenter observational study was done from July 2014 to June 2018 of individuals who were undergoing any surgical procedure involving mitral valve repair or replacement (MVRR) in the United States, researchers assessed the hospital, patient, and procedural features of MVRR as a function of hospital procedure volume. During the study period, a total of 165,405 MVRRs were done in 1,082 centers, of which 86,488 were MV repairs. In all, 575 centers (55%) did 25 or more MVRRs per year and with at least one such center, 92.6% of the US population resided in a hospital referral region. In individuals being treated at centers with various volumes, differences in race/ethnicity, rurality, and insurance status was observed. Hence, these data symbolize that attempts to incorporate care on the basis of the volume metrics would expect to balance access vs quality.
