Pathophysiologic mechanisms of itch in bullous pemphigoid
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Feb 08, 2020
Hashimoto T, Kursewicz CD, Fayne RA, et al. - In the present study, the researchers illustrated the pathophysiologic mechanisms of itch in bullous pemphigoid (BP). Through immunofluorescence staining, the expression of itch mediators in lesions of 24 individuals with BP and six healthy people were examined. In addition, the expression of itch mediators and itch severity was correlated. Findings suggested an association of itch severity with eosinophils, substance P, neurokinin 1R, interleukin (IL) 31 receptor A, oncostatin M receptor-β, IL-13, periostin, and basophils. BP-associated itch involves multiple factors, including eosinophils, substance P, neurokinin 1R, IL-31, IL-31 receptor A, oncostatin M receptor-β, IL-13, periostin, and basophils. They might be valuable therapeutic targets.
