Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure vs medical therapy for prevention of recurrent stroke in patients with prior cryptogenic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions | Apr 05, 2018
Akobeng AK, et al. - Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure was compared with medical therapy as a preventive strategy against stroke recurrence among survivors of a previous cryptogenic stroke. The analysis of data from relevant randomized controlled trials revealed the superiority of PFO closure to medical therapy in reducing the risk of stroke in the given patient population. Patients with a large PFO shunt, male patients, and those aged ≤45 years showed a more pronounced beneficial effect of PFO closure on a composite outcome of cerebrovascular events in subgroup analyses. PFO closure was recommended to be employed as a therapeutic option for adults with cryptogenic stroke.
