Patellar denervation reduces post-operative anterior knee pain after patellar resurfacing total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial

Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 30, 2020

Thiengwittayaporn S, Tangtrakul P, Hongku N, et al. - A randomized controlled trial was designed to evaluate if circumferential patellar denervation (PD) should be performed in patellar resurfacing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Researchers randomized a sum of 241 patients who had undergone unilateral TKA into PD or non-PD groups. They assessed the incidence, intensity, and presentation time of anterior knee pain (AKP), and clinical outcomes at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months postoperatively. This inexpensive procedure readily available in nearly every operation room is strongly recommended during primary TKA with patellar resurfacing, although PD can improve AKP and patient satisfaction at an early period postoperatively without jeopardizing clinical outcomes at no additional cost.
