Past history of hepatocellular carcinoma is an independent risk factor of treatment failure in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection receiving direct-acting antivirals
Journal of Viral Hepatitis Aug 03, 2018
Sugiura A, et al. - Researchers examined 838 direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treated patients (370 men, median age: 69 years) to perform a comparison of clinical findings between 79 patients with a history of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC [+])(9.4%) and 759 HCC (-) (90.6%) patients and investigate associations with treatment outcome. Observations revealed a higher probability of encountering more advanced disease progression at DAA commencement among patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and prior HCC. A significant association of HCC (+) status at the initiation of DAAs with adverse therapeutic outcomes was noted. Hence, they recommend initiating DAA treatment for HCV as early as possible, especially before complicating HCC.
