Parkinsonism in a population-based study of individuals aged 75+ years: The Pietà study
Parkinsonism & Related Disorders Jun 22, 2018
Vale TC, et al. - The Pietà study was a population-based study on brain aging conducted in Caeté, southeast Brazil intended to examine the incidence and features of parkinsonism in community-dwelling subjects aged 75+ years. For the purpose of this investigation, 610 individuals aged 75+ years underwent clinical, neurological, cognitive and functional assessments. Researchers reported that parkinsonism was prevalent in the community-dwelling oldest-old population and was linked with dementia and vascular risk factors, especially hypertension. Findings revealed that different confounders, such as concomitant dementia and exposure to anti-dopaminergic drugs, pose challenges to the etiological definition.
