Parity‐related variation in cortisol concentrations in hair during pregnancy
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Oct 29, 2020
Marteinsdottir I, Sydsjö G, Faresjö A, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cohort study to analyze hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) monthly in pregnant women and to investigate the impact of parity. This investigation was carried out at an antenatal care clinic in southeast Sweden. Three hundred ninety women were included in the study. Hair samples were taken at gestational week 26, at childbirth, and at the postpartum check-up. According to results, both primi‐ and multiparae showed an increase in HCC throughout pregnancy. Increased cortisol concentrations in the hair during pregnancy were found, which reduced 3 months before childbirth in multiparae. The findings suggest a faster suppression in multiparous women of hypothalamic CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) development by placenta CRH.
