Parents of extremely and moderately preterm children reported long-lasting impressions of medical care and the hospital environment
Acta Pediatrica Jan 23, 2020
Widding U, et al. - In the present study, the researchers characterized and compared the experiences of parents of extremely preterm and moderately preterm children. In 2013-2014, qualitative telephone interviews were conducted with 13 mothers and 10 fathers of extremely preterm children and with 11 mothers and seven fathers of moderately preterm children. The children were born in the 2000-2003 period. According to results, parents of extremely preterm children recounted dramatic birth stories which ended positively for most of them. Parents of moderately preterm children presented more neutral birth stories, and most recounted that medical staff did not pay attention to their children for prematureness. Parents whose children died or were handicapped recounted dramatic stories and endless supportive fighting. Parents from both groups had long-lasting impressions of the medical staff and the hospital environment which they considered relevant to address, even a decade after their child/children were born.
