Parenthood is associated with lower suicide risk: A register‐based cohort study of 1.5 million Swedes

Dehara M, Wells MB, Sjöqvist H, et al. - In men and women in Sweden, researchers examined whether parenthood among 25–44‐year‐olds is linked with a lower suicide rate and if selection into parenthood could explain this. From 1992 to 2011, follow up was performed on 1,582,360 Swedish women and men, who were born between 1967 and 1985 and were childless at their 25th birthday. In models with basic adjustments, they noted association of having one, two, three or more children with 64%, 79% and 78% lower suicide rate, respectively, vs having no children. Both men and women had a lower suicide risk in correlation with parenthood among 25–44‐year‐olds, but this was noted to a larger extent among women, and especially in parents with two or more children. Although selection into parenthood is possible, both men and women likely exhibit a protective effect of parenthood on suicide.
