Parent and physician understanding of prognosis in hospitalized children with advanced heart disease
Journal of the American Heart Association Jan 19, 2021
Morell E, Miller MK, Lu M, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to assess parent and physician understanding of disease burden and prognosis in hospitalized children with advanced heart disease. A longitudinal survey study of parents and physicians caring for patients with advanced heart disease age 30 days to 19 years admitted for ≥ 7 days was conducted over a 1‐year period (n = 160 pairs). In terms of prognosis and disease burden, parents and doctors caring for children with advanced heart disease varied in their viewpoints. Physicians appeared to underestimate the degree of symptom burden reported by the parent. Parents have been less likely to expect physical activity, learning/behavior, and life expectancy limitations. It could be helpful to combine measures involving patient-reported performance, parent education, and physician communication resources.
