Paravertebral block for percutaneous nephrolithotomy: A prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study
World Journal of Urology Jan 31, 2020
Baldea KG, Patel PM, Santos GD, et al. - A prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study was conducted to evaluate the impact of the paravertebral blockade on intraoperative and postoperative opioid use as well as postoperative pain control in patients undergoing PCNL. They included a total of 23 individuals in each arm of the study. They randomized individuals to undergo either PVB or a placebo intervention preoperatively. In this study, intraoperative opioid requirement, postoperative visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, postoperative opioid use, and postoperative antiemetic use were the outcome parameters. The outcomes of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial imply that PVB should be recognized as a useful strategy to decrease opioid requirement and improve pain control for patients undergoing PCNL.
