Paravertebral block associated with decreased opioid use and less nausea and vomiting after reduction mammaplasty
Journal of Surgical Research Jun 17, 2018
Rivedal DD, et al. - Given the utility of preoperative paravertebral block (PVB) in reducing opioid administration and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in many surgical populations, PVB was evaluated as an adjunct to general anesthesia (GA) for reduction mammaplasty. Researchers categorized patients, who underwent reduction mammaplasty at their institution from 2010 to 2015, into two groups: GA alone and GA + PVB (GA with PVB adjunct). As per outcomes, PVB improved pain control and reduced PONV, the factors known to be associated with poor patient satisfaction and inferior outcomes. This indicates PVB to be an attractive anesthetic adjunct in elective breast surgery.
