Paragangliomas of the head and neck: Local control and functional outcome following fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Nov 05, 2019
Weissmann T, Lettmaier S, Roesch J, et al. - Researchers assessed 40 consecutive patients with paragangliomas of the head and neck who received conventionally fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) from 2003 to 2016 at the Department of Radiation Oncology of the University Hospital Erlangen in order to ascertain the local control and functional outcome following state-of-the-art FSRT for paragangliomas of the head and neck. Radiotherapy was provided to a total of 80.0% (32/40) of patients as part of their primary treatment. Radiation was used as salvage treatment after tumor recurrence in 20.0% (8/40) of patients; these patients were initially treated with surgery alone. Outcomes revealed the achievement of excellent control and favorable functional outcome on providing state-of-the-art FSRT in patients with paragangliomas of the head and neck. Following volumetric analysis, improved evidence was gained indicating sustained tumor control.
