Pancreatic manifestations in rheumatoid arthritis: A national population-based study
Rheumatology Dec 22, 2020
Alkhayyat M, Saleh MA, Aggrawal M, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the epidemiology of pancreas involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using a large database. From 1999 to 2019, they queried a multicenter database (Explorys Inc, Cleveland, OH), an aggregate of electronic health record data from 26 major integrated US healthcare systems in the US. Of the 56,183,720 people in the database, 518,280 patients were diagnosed with RA. The authors observed a modest increased risk of acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis among patients with RA in this large database after adjusting for the common causes of pancreatitis. Further studies are needed to better understand this connection and the impact of medications used for RA.
