Pancreatic cancer and autoimmune diseases: An association sustained by computational and epidemiological case–control approaches
International Journal of Cancer Feb 11, 2019
Gomez-Rubio P, et al. - Researchers used a computational approach and an epidemiological analysis, to determine the common genetic background of pancreatic cancer (PC) and different morbidities as well as to further assess the link between PC and autoimmune diseases (AIDs), respectively. They utilized the DisGeNET public discovery platform to gain gene-disease associations (GDAs) of 26 morbidities of interest and PC. They also used multivariable logistic regression models in the PanGen European case–control study population of 1,705 PC cases and 1,084 controls, to corroborate the link between AIDs and PC pointed by the computational analysis. In the DisGeNET database, at least one gene was shared by 15 morbidities and PC. Significant association with low PC risk was shown by polymyalgia rheumatica, and rheumatoid arthritis in independent analyses. Overall, an association between AIDs and a reduced risk of PC was demonstrated.
