Palonosetron vs ondansetron for prevention of nausea and vomiting after total abdominal hysterectomy under spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial
BMC Anesthesiology Aug 22, 2019
Campos GO, de Jesus Martins M, Jesus GN, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the use of palonosetron vs ondansetron for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) prophylaxis in patients at a high risk of PONV during total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) under spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine. In this randomized double-blind study, 140 American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II women; these women had undergone TAH under spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine and had at least 3 risk factors for PONV based on Apfel simplified score. The women were randomized to receive either palonosetron or ondansetron. Outcomes suggest that palonosetron and ondansetron have similar efficacy for reducing the overall incidence of PONV after TAH under spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine; however, palonosetron vs ondansetron led to significantly better reduction of the incidence of late-onset vomiting.
