Palatal augmentation prostheses in individuals treated for head and neck cancer: Effects on speech and oral transport

Löfhede H, et al. - Since negative side effects influencing articulation and oral transport are common after treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC), researchers evaluated the impacts on speech and patient-reported experience of palatal augmentation prostheses (PAP) in this patient group. Participants in the study were 20 consecutive patients who had received a PAP. According to results, seven out of 20 patients indicated better transport of food or saliva. A PAP may assist HNC-treated patients to more reliably articulated velar consonants and may benefit oral transport.
