Pain perception in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa
British Journal of Dermatology Jul 15, 2019
Nielsen RM, et al. - In this investigation involving 138 patients, researchers characterized hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)-related pain quantitatively and qualitatively and examined how disease severity, depression and anxiety correlate with self-reported pain quality. Using the McGill Pain Questionnaire, pain perception was examined. Using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, depression symptoms and anxiety were investigated. 'Shooting’, ‘itchy’ and ‘blinding’ were the most common descriptors. According to findings, HS-related pain involves nociceptive and neuropathic pain, and perception seems to be affected by the severity of disease, anxiety and depression. A multimodal pain management strategy may be the most suitable, however, to define pain management recommendations, more detailed studies are needed.
