Pain measurement in mechanically ventilated patients after cardiac surgery: Comparison of the Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS) and the CriticalâCare Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Aug 18, 2017
Rijkenberg S, et al. – This prospective, observational cohort study intended to compare the reliability, internal consistency, and discriminant validation of the Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS) and the Critical–Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) simultaneously in mechanically ventilated patients after cardiac surgery. In a daily clinical setting, the BPS and CPOT were reliable and valid pain assessment tools. However, in sedated or agitated patients, the discriminant validation of both scores seemed less satisfactory and this topic needed further investigation.
