Pain flare-effect prophylaxis with corticosteroids on bone radiotherapy treatment: A systematic review
Pain Practice Sep 24, 2019
Fabregat C, et al. - The efficacy and toxicity of prophylactic corticosteroids for the prevention of pain flare were evaluated via performing a systematic review (PROSPERO protocol CRD42018090351) of peer-reviewed studies. From a total of 4,407 identified studies, researchers included 4 clinical trials and 1 prospective cohort study in this work. Pain flare was observed in 28%, and the prophylaxis vs non-prophylaxis groups had pain flare incidence of 21% vs 37%; the relative risk reduction was 43%. The findings support the efficacy of glucocorticoids as a prophylactic treatment to prevent pain flare in patients undergoing radiotherapy for bone metastases.
