Pain-associated clusters among nursing home residents and older adults receiving home care in Germany
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Apr 04, 2020
Budnick A, Kuhnert R, Wenzel A, et al. - Researchers sought to recognize and inscribe pain-associated clusters in nursing home residents (NHRs) and older adults receiving home care with chronic pain. In addition, they examined correlations with clusters in both settings. Using hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, using Ward's method with squared Euclidean distances in the proximities matrix, they determined clusters among 137 NHRs and 205 older adults receiving home care. The following three clusters were identified in each setting: pain relieved, pain impaired, and suffering severe pain. Within the two care settings, there were differences in pain management. In the nursing home study and home care study, respectively, the pain-relieved cluster was identified in 46.72% and 11.71% participants, the pain-impaired cluster in 22.63% and 33.66% participants, and the severe-pain cluster in 30.66% and 54.63% participants. Only pain-relieved NHRs were observed to be on appropriate pain medication.
