International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Apr 14, 2019
Bullock L, et al. - In view of the significance of timely recognition of pain in people with dementia for ensuring efficacious management and lowering adverse effects of medication, the current literature on pain assessment and treatment for pain in community-dwelling people with dementia was summarized by conducting a comprehensive systematic search of the literature with narrative synthesis. The review utilized 32 studies, with 11 reporting on pain assessment tools or methods and 27 reporting on pain treatments. as per findings, they recommend adopting a multidimensional approach to pain assessment including self-report assessments, pain history information, physical examination, informant-based ratings, and observation of pain behaviors. They identified the essentiality of undertaking regular and structured medication reviews in patients with dementia to assess the use, efficacy, and side effects of analgesic prescriptions. More research is needed regarding dementia patients and pain assessment and/or treatment.
