Pain and sedation scales for neonatal and pediatric patients in a preverbal stage of development: A systematic review
JAMA Pediatrics Oct 21, 2019
Giordano V, Edobor J, Deindl P, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers sought to provide clinicians with a comprehensive overview of the validity and reliability of the existing pain and sedation scales for various target populations (preterm infants, term infants, and infants) and in various clinical contexts. A total of 89 validation articles involving 65 scales were included. Only 28 out of 65 scales were tested for construct validity, internal consistency, and interrater reliability. Clinicians should consider using scales validated for at least building accuracy, internal consistency, and reliability of interrater, integrating this data with the target population and measuring the scale construct.
