Pain and emotion as predictive factors of interoception in fibromyalgia
Journal of Pain Research Apr 25, 2018
Borg C, et al. - Researchers searched for interoception in fibromyalgia (FM), a disorder characterized by chronic pain accompanied by mood deregulation. Based on observations on the relationship between somatosensory processing and pain in FM and considering the affective symptoms of this disorder, three dimensions of interoception were tested in FM: interoceptive accuracy (IA), interoceptive awareness (IAW) and interoceptive sensibility (IS). They noted that in FM patients, pain-related affect and reactions can reduce their interoceptive ability. Findings provide a better understanding regarding the integration between bodily signals and emotional processing in chronic pain.
