Paediatric periorbital cellulitis: A 10‐year retrospective case series review
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health Feb 26, 2021
Murphy DC, Meghji S, Alfiky M, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to identify the predictors of poor outcome and the need for surgical management in paediatric patients with periorbital cellulitis, as well as to evaluate the adherence to local guidelines in the management of periorbital cellulitis. In total, 175 paediatric presentations were diagnosed as periorbital infections over the 10‐year period. Ophthalmoplegia, proptosis and pain on eye movement were the best predictors of post‐septal disease in the multivariate analysis. The single most powerful surgical management predictor was proptosis. For most patients, multidisciplinary involvement and early medical management may improve outcomes. To prevent serious life-threatening or sight-threatening complications, any who deteriorate despite medical management should be considered for timely imaging and surgical management.
