Oxidative stress markers in neonatal respiratory distress syndrome: Advanced oxidation protein products and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine in relation to disease severity
Pediatric Research Jun 23, 2019
Elkabany ZA, et al. - In the development and severity of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), researchers evaluated the oxidant-antioxidant status and assessed the role of lipid peroxidation, oxidative DNA damage, and protein oxidation. For this investigation, 40 preterm neonates with RDS have been compared to 40 other preterm neonates without RDS being registered as controls. Findings revealed that elevated serum levels of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine and advanced oxidation protein products were linked to severe RDS, invasive mechanical ventilation, and high mortality rate. According to findings, increased oxidation of lipids, proteins and DNA is followed by changes in the antioxidant defense status, which can play a part in RDS pathogenesis and severity.
