Overweight and obesity reduce the likelihood of achieving sustained remission in early rheumatoid arthritis: Results from the Canadian Early Arthritis Cohort Study
Arthritis Care & Research Dec 04, 2017
Schulman E, et al. - This investigation was pursued to determine the independent impacts of overweight and obesity on the ability to achieve sustained remission (sREM) in the three years following RA diagnosis. High (69%) rates of overweight and obesity were reported in this ERA cohort. Despite similar initial DMARD treatment and subsequent biologic use, sREM achievement was 25% and 47% less likely in overweight and obese patients, respectively. Hence, a negative impact of excess weight on RA disease activity was demonstrated in this largest study and a call to action to better identify and address this risk in RA patients was supported.
