Overview of seminal fluid biomarkers for the evaluation of chronic prostatitis: A scoping review
Prostate Cancer & Prostatic Diseases Dec 02, 2021
Moryousef J, Blankstein U, Nickel JC, et al. - For patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), a number of very promising seminal biomarkers are available to aid categorization as well as monitoring of therapies.
In this scoping review, all relevant publications across five databases (Ovid Medline, Ovid EMBASE, PubMed, CCRT, and the CINAHL) were identified, to synthesize all the available data for seminal fluid biomarkers employed to evaluate patients with CP/CPPS.
Eligible articles were 27 overall, most of them being case-control (15), with 6 observational cohorts and 6 comparative interventional studies.
Participants (pooled patients) were 585 patients with CP/CPPS (unspecified subtype), 371 with inflammatory CP/CPPS, 387 with non-inflammatory CP/CPPS, 354 with chronic bacterial prostatitis, and 432 healthy controls.
Most often, inflammatory seminal biomarkers were assessed, and the most promising candidates were IL6, IL8, TNFα and IL1β.
