Overview of randomised controlled trials in total knee arthroplasty (47,675 patients): what have we learnt?
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 05, 2020
Matar HE, et al. - Randomized controlled trials were designed to present an overview of randomized controlled trials (RCT) in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) summarising the available high-quality evidence. Researchers searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL, 2019, Issue 3), Ovid MEDLINE, and Embase, following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Non-randomized trials, trials on uni-compartmental knee arthroplasty or revision surgery, systematic reviews and meta-analyses were excluded. They selected 403 RCTs including a total of 47,675 individuals. The results showed that a standard conventional TKA with a surgical approach familiar to the surgeon utilizing standard well-established components, with or without a tourniquet, without surgical drain leads to satisfactory long-term clinical outcomes for the vast majority of individuals.
