Overall and disease-specific mortality in patients with Cushing's disease: A Swedish nationwide study
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Feb 09, 2019
Ragnarsson O, et al. - In this Swedish nationwide study between 1987 and 2013, authors analyzed 502 candidates with a mean age of 43 years to assess the overall and disease-specific mortality as well as predictive factors in Cushing's disease (CD) cases. They observed overall standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) of 2.5 with a number of deaths ie, 133 vs 54 expected. They noted cardiovascular diseases, the most common cause of death. Parallel, they found excess mortality due to infections and suicides. They reported an independent association of bilateral adrenalectomy and glucocorticoid replacement therapy with enhanced mortality but growth hormone replacement was correlated with an improved outcome.
