Over-connected? A qualitative exploration of smartphone addiction among working adults in China
BMC Psychiatry Jun 23, 2019
Li L, et al. - Using a qualitative approach, researchers investigated 32 working adults in China for symptoms of smartphone addiction and related influential psychological factors. They conducted semi-structured interviews, either face to face or via Skype, among the working adults. Withdrawal (eg, experiencing negative feelings when having no access to smartphones), salience (eg, constant checking and thinking about smartphones), conflict (eg, smartphone use interferes with family and work life), and phantom phone signals (eg, illusory perception of a phone vibrating or ringing) were four typical symptoms of smartphone addiction recognized in this study. The tendency for smartphone addiction was higher in correlation to conscientiousness, neuroticism, and extroversion.
