Over a third of childbearing women with HIV would like to breastfeed: A UK survey of women living with HIV
International Journal of STD & AIDS Mar 03, 2021
Nyatsanza F, Gubbin J, Gubbin T, et al. - In low- and middle-income countries, postpartum women living with HIV (WLHs) are advised by the World Health Organisation to breastfeed on suppressive antiretroviral treatment and use infant postnatal prophylaxis. Avoidance of breastfeed is advised in resource-rich settings, where formula feeding is safe. Researchers here created a questionnaire to survey attitudes to breastfeeding in WLHs in the United Kingdom. The questionnaire was completed by 94 women. Among these, 69% were Black African and 92% had an undetectable HIV viral load. Formula feeding has been recommended by current UK guidelines, proposing a harm decreasing strategy to support women with suppressed HIV who wish to breastfeed. Among respondents, over a third said they would like to breastfeed as stigma and secrecy remain an issue for WLHs. This suggests that this option may be chose by more women over time.
