Outpatient vs inpatient parotidectomy: Systematic review and meta‐analysis
Head & Neck Oct 07, 2020
Benito DA, Pasick LJ, Bestourous D, et al. - In this systematic review and meta‐analysis, researchers sought to compare complications between outpatient vs inpatient parotidectomy. A systematic review was conducted to identify patients undergoing either outpatient or inpatient partodiectomy, in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis guidelines, utilizing PUBMED, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and the Cochrane library. Postoperative complications (hematoma, seroma/sialocele, salivary fistula formation, Frey syndrome, surgical site infection [SSI]) have been compared. No significant difference in total complications, hematoma, seroma, salivary fistula, or SSI rates was found between outpatient and inpatient groups. There was no significant difference in total complications between outpatient and inpatient groups when stratified by surgical approach (partial/superficial and total parotidectomy). The results indicate that outpatient parotidectomy in suitably chosen patients can be as safe as inpatient parotidectomy.
