Outcomes utilizing intensity-modulated radiotherapy in oropharyngeal cancers: Tonsils vs base of tongue
Head & Neck May 11, 2018
Kanakamedala MR, et al. - Authors studied the outcomes of oropharyngeal cancers treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), particularly the variances between tonsillar and base of tongue (BOT) primaries. Distant failure of these patients was noted, and was particularly significant for the BOT group and for nodal stage >N2c, even though the locoregional controls were excellent with IMRT and chemotherapy. In both tonsillar and BOT primaries, human papillomavirus (HPV) association correlated with improvement in survival. In both the tonsil and BOT groups, the cumulative incidences of locoregional recurrences were 8%. In the tonsil group, distant metastases were 8% vs 26% in the BOT group.
